Prioritizing global edits over local edits was harder for me than I expected. It made me realize how different I had been peer reviewing in the past. It really allowed me to focus on the broader idea of the paper rather than knit-picking at the little grammatical details. I think i focus too much on those so it inhibits me from helping the paper I am looking at along in the bigger picture. I often get caught up or distracted by a spelling mistake or a run-on sentence and do not let myself pay attention to the main focus of the paper. It is not my job to be “spell-check” when peer reviewing, but rather to see the point the paper is aiming to make and help it along to achieve that goal. Forcing myself to look past the relatively irrelevant flaws allowed me to see how the paper could improve on a larger scale. I think it was helpful for me to do so I can also apply that to my own writing. Where I previously viewed this editing process as a place to catch a comma splice or two, I know see it as an opportunity to rearrange the big ideas and find out how to best develop the paper.
